What This Tool Does

The CSV Data Cleaner runs only after you choose cleaning settings and click Clean CSV. It supports trimming text, removing empty rows, removing empty columns, snake_case headers, and optional exact duplicate removal.

Cleaning method

Cleaning applies only the enabled options to a generated output copy. The original file in the browser remains unchanged, and cleaned output is downloadable only after explicit processing.

Worked Example

Load a messy export, trim whitespace, remove blank rows and columns, convert headers to snake_case, then download a cleaned copy for analysis.

Common Mistakes

Cleaning headers without checking downstream code that expects the original names.
Removing duplicate rows before checking whether one row contains newer corrected data.
Treating empty columns as useless when they may be placeholders for future data entry.

Limitations

Cleaning is rule-based and does not infer semantic corrections.
No fuzzy duplicate matching is performed.
The tool does not validate domain-specific data-entry constraints.

What does the cleaner change?

Only enabled options are applied: whitespace trimming, empty row removal, empty column removal, header cleanup, and optional exact duplicate removal.

Are duplicates removed?

Only when the remove duplicates option is enabled. Matching is exact after any selected whitespace trimming.

What is snake_case?

snake_case uses lowercase words separated by underscores, such as sample_id.

Are empty rows removed automatically?

No. They are removed only after you run Clean CSV with the option enabled.

Can cleaning alter original data?

The downloaded cleaned CSV can alter copied values according to your options, but the source file is not modified.

Are CSV files uploaded to ScholarTool?

No. The selected CSV file is read and processed locally in your browser. ScholarTool does not upload the file to a third-party calculation or data-analysis API.

Can the tool handle large CSV files?

The browser-local workflow enforces a 25 MB file limit, 200,000 parsed-row limit, 250-column limit, bounded previews, and bounded result tables to avoid freezing the page.
