What This Tool Does

The Train-Test Split Generator shuffles rows locally with a seeded pseudo-random generator, optionally splits within each class of a stratification column, and exports separate CSV files.

Split method

Rows are shuffled with a deterministic seed and then assigned by configured percentages. Stratified mode shuffles and splits within each selected class value.

Worked Example

Load a labeled classification CSV, choose 70/15/15, set seed 42, stratify by class, and download three CSV files with approximate class proportions preserved.

Common Mistakes

Changing the seed and expecting the same split.
Scaling or encoding all data before splitting when formal modeling requires train-only fitting.
Using random splitting for time-series data where temporal order matters.

Limitations

This tool does not train machine-learning models.
Small stratification classes may not appear in every split.
Time-series and grouped-leakage split strategies are not included.

Why split a dataset?

Splitting separates rows for training, validation, and testing so model evaluation can be less biased.

What does the seed do?

The seed initializes the deterministic shuffle. The same data, percentages, and seed produce the same split.

What is stratified splitting?

Stratified splitting applies the split within each class value to better preserve class proportions.

What train-test percentage should be used?

Common starting points are 70/30, 80/20, or 70/15/15, but the correct split depends on data size and modeling goals.

Is this suitable for time-series data?

Usually no. Time-series workflows often require chronological splits rather than random shuffling.

Are CSV files uploaded to ScholarTool?

No. The selected CSV file is read and processed locally in your browser. ScholarTool does not upload the file to a third-party calculation or data-analysis API.

Can the tool handle large CSV files?

The browser-local workflow enforces a 25 MB file limit, 200,000 parsed-row limit, 250-column limit, bounded previews, and bounded result tables to avoid freezing the page.
