What This Tool Does

The Cronbach Alpha Calculator treats rows as respondents and columns as items. It calculates reliability diagnostics only after Calculate Alpha is clicked and warns that alpha does not prove validity.

Cronbach alpha uses item variances and total-score variance from a complete numeric item-response matrix.

Worked Example

Rows such as 4,5,4 and 3,4,3 represent respondent item scores; columns are items.

Common Mistakes

Treating alpha as proof of validity.
Ignoring dimensionality and item wording.

Limitations

McDonald's omega and factor analysis are out of scope.
Reverse scoring must be handled before or by selecting prepared columns.

What does Cronbach alpha measure?

It estimates internal consistency among selected items under assumptions such as related item responses.

Is alpha above 0.7 always acceptable?

No. Thresholds depend on the construct, context, number of items, and evidence beyond alpha.

Does alpha prove validity?

No. Alpha is a reliability estimate and does not prove construct validity.

What is alpha if item deleted?

It recalculates alpha after removing one item, helping identify items that may reduce consistency.

Does the Cronbach Alpha Calculator calculate automatically while I type?

No. Inputs and CSV previews never produce final statistics until the explicit calculate button is clicked.

Are CSV files uploaded?
